We all know Old Man Winter can wreak havoc on fuel systems……….particularly above ground fuel tanks with suspended water that can turn into ice when the temperature drops below 32F. So to avoid such problems as hard starts, black smoke, corrosion, breakdowns and loss of power, Steel Camel has put together a 7 step program to help you. The key to the program is crystal clear fuel as water in your fuel will also reduce the power of the engine due to water cannot be compressed. 1. Test the Clarity of Your Fuel. This will require acquiring fuel samples from the fuel column and bottom of the tank and running them through a Steel Camel water absorbing filter for 3-5 minutes. All you will need is a small transfer pump with hose, a few glass jars and bailer or bacon bomb to retrieve the sample. If you can see a difference in clarity, we recommend polishing the fuel with Steel Camel filters to remove the water. More on this later in the article 2. Cut Open Filters and Inspect for Sludge. If you have sludge, you have water problems. Steel Camel recommends the Longacre Fuel Filter Cutter Opener which can be found online Amazon and Summit Racing. If you have sludge problems, use a sludge bomb from your favorite additive company. 3. Apply Water Blocking Grease to Fuel Fill Caps and Spill Buckets. Steel Camel’s Aquablokker will not only help you remove frozen lids, but the special polymer will expand to block unwanted water from entering your fuel system. 4. Absorb Water Vapor and Suspended Water at The Same Time with Steel Camel’s Water Absorbing Socks. The specical chemistry in the sock will slowly attract and hold water vapor in the ullage space as well as suspended water in the fuel column. This product is particularly useful if the tanks are not full and if they will be sitting idle during the winter. Whether you have a 2” or 3” fill opening or 1000 gallons to 5,000 gallons, Steel Camel has a 1” and 2’ wide socks from 18” to 108” inches in length to meet your requirements. 5. Remove Water from Your Tank with Steel Camel Filters Using the Kidney Loop System It is hard to make ice with no water. Steel Camel offers filter carts in a variety of sizes to tackle tanks from 50 to 5,000 gallons. All carts are equipped with industrial pumps and motors and come complete with hoses and fittings to get the job done. Use the kidney loop system and remove as much water as you can. 6. Protect Your Battery Terminals and Electrical Pin Connectors Steel Camel’s One Two Punch Anti Corrosion Kit. The moisture and condensation developed in the winter can accelerate corrosion on your electrical and charging systems. The last thing you need in the winter is battery terminal corrosion and voltage drop that will make it harder for your battery to crank and cause your fuel pump to work harder. In Summary.
Winter is hard enough so don’t make it worse with ice and water in your fuel. To prevent such problems, Steel Camel recommends removing the water early, often and whenever possible to get you through to spring.
